Life on the water at Port Owen

Holiday houses with their own jetties, local trades you can trust and somewhere good for supper — all around the marina, about two hours up the R27 from Cape Town.

Where the Berg River meets St Helena Bay

Port Owen is a marina village built around canals off the Berg River. Many houses have a jetty at the bottom of the garden, so mornings start with coffee on the stoep and a boat ride is never far away.

Next door, Velddrif and Laaiplek are old fishing towns. Mullet still dries into bokkoms along Bokkom Laan, the salt pans shimmer pink, and the estuary fills with flamingos and pelicans.

  • Calm water for skiing, paddling and SUP
  • Some of the best birding on the West Coast
  • Fishing from the river or out in the bay
  • Sunsets over the water, every single evening

Port Owen Yacht Club

Sailors, social members and visiting sailors welcome.

The club sits on the Berg River estuary at Port Owen, about 3.5 km upriver from the Laaiplek harbour mouth on St Helena Bay. Members sail, race dinghies, take out powerboats and kayak on a sheltered bay and a wide, slow river. Protected moorings in the marina, managed by the Port Owen Marina Authority, give safe access to both the river and the ocean.

Clubhouse life runs to pub grub on Wednesdays, a sit-down set-menu dinner on Fridays and Saturday braais with sport on the big screen — plus bingo, singalongs, pétanque, Winter Wonderland and the Closing Cruise. Flamingos and egrets are often in view from the clubhouse.
